We had the opportunity to work with local firefighters from across Tennessee this weekend at the Smoky Mountain Weekend in Gatlinburg to help teach wildland firefighting tactics. The instructors, Dave Puckett and Kevin Nunn, have been teaching this course for nearly a decade and bring theoretical and practical experience to the class. We used two SimTables to simulate different scenarios and experiment with different weather conditions, fuel conditions, and tactics.
We also developed GIS data and maps for the attendees to help with planning and stakeholder engagement that include the various WUI boundaries within their communities, building footprints when available, and historic wildfire data.
