Students in Dr. Melissa Hinten’s Environmental Issues in National Parks class recently researched several fires impacting federal land including the Railroad Fire, Sprague Fire, Chimney Tops 2 Fire, and Las Conchas Fire. Students learned about the causes of the fires as well as the impacts including structures destroyed, evacuations, and the loss of life for both civilians and firefighters. Students were also able to simulate each fire and watch its progression using the SimTable. Finally, students learned how to use the SimTable to model a wildfire of their own design and practice different wildfire fighting strategies.
